Freshman English is a year long course that focuses on a variety of English skills. Students will spend the first semester learning about the structure of the short story and the elements of literature. Students will read the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird and discuss its themes, literary merit and elements important to the overall understanding of the novel. The final unit of the first semester covers Greek mythology and epic poetry, leading up to the study of Homer's The Odyssey. The second semester will focus on research skills, non-fiction, and Shakespearean drama. Students will also read Romeo and Juliet. Language study, writing skills and grammar are critical components interspersed throughout all units.
